Why did I choose this word?

Focus on your “Why” it will be your motivation. 
Shift started to appear itself to me in August when I felt like things were taking a different road. In my Passion Planner, it’s easy to make changes for myself, but the same couldn’t be said for the Artist of Life workbook. I felt stuck in previous goals that didn’t feel relative to me. In fact, I didn’t complete the goal in my 3rd quarter and 4th quarter of 2020 because they didn’t feel relative. 

I chose shift for my word for the year because the ground beneath my feet is constantly changing. As if the world is constantly reminding me to take what resonates and leave the rest, to slow down, to not get ahead of myself, to take things in strides.

I have to be able to change in a matter of seconds and that's sometimes hard to do.

When I am in a good mood, motivated and all, I have to grasp at it and get work done because I'm not sure when I'll feel blocked, unwilling, or unsure even. But sometimes when I rush into things, grasping and getting so much done, I end up hurting myself. For some, it leads to burnout, but to me, it could be like pain that I've never had before reminding me to take things slow. That nothing good comes from rushing or anxiousness. It's hard to slow down in those moments, be aware, be present. It's hard to shift. It's hard to stay steady when the ground is changing. But I must. For there is no other way.

Things change, life changes, and we as humans have to be able to bend when it bends. Life, as we knew it, changed so much in 2020 alone. For me, a lot of what I wanted wasn’t available to me anymore. Yes, I had found my identity again, but I didn’t relate to what I wanted at the beginning of 2020, and I really wanted to create a way for myself to check in quarterly and ask myself, "Is this still what I want? Is this still what I need?" If not, figure which aspects do I need to change in, and change with them.

There's nothing wrong with either giving up something if you can't physically and/or mentally handle something. Some things just aren't for some people. BUT there's nothing wrong with working through things either. Just ask all the professionals who've learned their trade. None of them were just born with it; they had to learn it. Anything you want in your life will not come easy, but it CAN be done.

So I'm not sure where my journey is taking me. All I know is that I have to trust it and myself, put what I can forward, and let life handle the rest.

Wrapping it Up

I've seen so many people rush to start on their new year goals calling it, as usual, "New Year New Me." But honestly, not much changes unless you make the change. You have to be intentional in your desires. It doesn't have to be big, you just have to start.

Therefore, it really takes me a lot of time to really get detailed about what changes do I want to see in myself. I like to sit down and focus, and sometimes I come back to it multiple times throughout the month to add to it. I also caught a cold so it's been a struggle to sit down for a long period of time during that first week. My luck! And I don't go much of anywhere... But I really don't like to start writing out new goals before the year ends or rushing it. It's almost like playing into FOMO, fear of missing out. Always looking forward to the next thing, instead of living in the present right here, right now.

I think a lot of people forget that the present is just as important as the future. It makes the destination that much more worth it. Any day can be a good day, so as long as you put your mind to it. I'm not saying smile through the pain, but don't cast out a day as a bad day if it was just mundane. To be honest with you, I feel blessed for those boring days now. It reminds me, "Ah! I'm not stressed out." And that's something to be grateful for, no?

I also try to make this part of the process just as visible as a vision board. The vision board is my next step and probably the activity of February. But I like to take all the answers here, and put them in my planner, put them in my iPad, put them where I can see them, and look back on them from time to time. Reminding myself my why, what do I want, who I want to be, etc. I'm not going to get there without starting. So another option for my February activity might be learning how to break goals down in a way that they're S.M.A.R.T.

Whichever the case, I hope you continue on this journey with me. Come April, July, October, and the end of December I'm going to have 2 activities per month available. One for that month, and another to look back on the previous quarter and deduce whether to keep going or to shift.
